But, by the time I reached 18, I was already brainwashed by the idea that I needed to get a good education and find a respectable job to live a "financially successful" life. 

I ended up going to college to become an accountant (... of all things!). 

By the time I was finishing up college, I was miserable to say the least.  After sucking it up for a year, I realized I had made a terrible mistake trying to be an accountant.

It was my deep, innate desire since I was a little kid to go into business for myself and control my OWN future instead of someone else.... and I had pretty much forgotten about it when I started college. 

Even though I finished school and graduated with my degree, my focus went completely back to starting my own business.

The problem was, I didn't know where to go to start one...

This was at a time when the internet was first starting out.  During the mid-90s, I saw it as a great opportunity and decided to jump in with both feet, but I was absolutely clueless about how to make any money online.

Back then, nobody was teaching this stuff.   There were no courses being taught on internet business, so I had to learn it the hardest way possible... through trial and error.

Needless To Say, My First 3 Websites Were Horrific Failures!

I would be absolutely terrified to show my first websites to anyone now.  And because of that, I had to go through some really unrewarding part-time jobs, from flipping pizzas at Pizza Hut to sticking worthless post-it notes on people's front doors trying to give them a “free” water filter demonstration.

In my first year out of college my total gross income was $5,000, and that's including my part-time jobs (hard to imagine, I know).  I lived in a tiny 400 square-foot "shoebox" apartment, cruised town in a beat-up 1986 Buick Century.

By not having a clear system or any real marketing knowledge, I suffered the consequences... and I do mean SUFFER!

It was no joke.

However, during my last job, something happened in me that would actually lead to my first success online, and I'll tell you how...

While walking door to door sticking post-it notes on houses... I hit rock bottom.  I just couldn't do it anymore. 

I realized right then I was sleep walking through life, and just playing a "game" without really being serious about being successful in life.  And boy was I hurting. 

I couldn't help but think, "What am I doing? Am I really cut out to be successful? What does my future hold?  A life of success and freedom, or just misery living paycheck-to-paycheck for the rest of my life?"

It was kind of scary...

Everything around me was telling me to just give up on being a successful entrepreneur and becoming financially free.  I should just go back to getting a "real" job, and live the life that you're "supposed to" live.

At that point, I had a choice... to either quit and go back, or keep believing in myself and moving forward despite seeing very little hope.

I realized at that point that the ONLY way I was going to make my financial dreams come true was to stop "playing" business, and start "doing" business. I realized I wasn't truly committed to building an online business the right way, which is what destroys most people who try to do it.

My only hope was to take on this kind of approach if I wanted to make it as an online entrepreneur.  That was the mental "shift" I needed to keep going, and finally breakthrough to my very first success online. 

My Very First Breakthrough Discovery...

Through trial and error, I developed a new marketing strategy in my niche market that apparently NO ONE was using at the time, and I started having great success. 

So, I thought, "Why not create and sell a training product on what I just discovered?"

It sounded like a good idea... it worked so well for me, I was sure other people would like it as well.

I packaged up everything I had learned, and created a nifty lead generation system with customized landing pages way before there were any tools such as keyword research, to make the process easy.

That finally led to my first big success online.  At the highest point, I sold $10,000 dollars worth of my program in a single month.

I was also running a niche content site that was making a few hundred to a thousand dollars per month, using several affiliate programs.  The owner of the best affiliate product I was selling suddenly told me he was shutting down his site because he had other projects.

I offered to run the site for him, implementing some of the ideas I learned through trial and error, if he was willing to split the profits.

I was ecstatic, but after all the failures I had suffered, I honestly wondered if it was just dumb luck.  But I still quit my job and went full time with my online business for the very first time in 1999.
